2 जून, 2014 को तेलंगाना राज्य के गठन के बाद राज्यों की संख्या 29 हो गई थी। परंतु जम्मू एवं कश्मीर राज्य पुनर्गठन अधिनियम 2019 के लागू होने (31 अक्टूबर, 2019) के बाद जम्मू-कश्मीर को दो केंद्र शासित प्रदेशों (जम्मू-कश्मीर तथा लद्दाख) में विभाजित कर दिए जाने से राज्यों की संख्या पुनः घटकर 28 हो गई है।
Following the creation of Telangana on 2 June 2014, the number of states became 29. However, with the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 bifurcating J&K into two Union Territories (J&K and Ladakh), the current number of states is 28.
