संविधान के अनुच्छेद 83(2) के परंतुक के अनुसार, राष्ट्रीय आपातकाल की उद्घोषणा प्रवर्तन में रहने के दौरान संसद विधि बनाकर लोक सभा की अवधि को एक बार में एक वर्ष से अनधिक अवधि के लिए कितनी भी बार बढ़ा सकती है, परंतु आपातकाल समाप्त होने के पश्चात इसका विस्तार किसी भी दशा में 6 माह से अधिक नहीं होगा।
