गवर्नमेंट ऑफ इंडिया एक्ट, 1919 (भारत शासन अधिनियम, 1919) की धारा 96C के प्रावधानों के तहत तथा ली आयोग (1923-24) की सिफारिशों पर भारत में पहली बार 1 अक्टूबर, 1926 को लोक सेवा आयोग की स्थापना की गई थी। सर रॉस बार्कर इसके पहले अध्यक्ष थे। 1935 के अधिनियम द्वारा इसका नाम संघीय लोक सेवा आयोग (Federal Public Service Commission) किया गया।
Under Section 96C of the Government of India Act, 1919 and following the recommendations of the Lee Commission (1923–24), the Public Service Commission was established for the first time in India on October 1, 1926. Sir Ross Barker was its first Chairman. Under the 1935 Act, it was renamed the Federal Public Service Commission.
