वर्तमान में भारतीय संविधान की आठवीं अनुसूची में कुल 22 मान्यता प्राप्त भाषाएं हैं। प्रारंभ में संविधान में 14 भाषाएं थीं। 21वें संशोधन (1967) से सिंधी, 71वें संशोधन (1992) से कोंकणी, मणिपुरी, नेपाली तथा 92वें संशोधन (2003) से बोडो, डोगरी, मैथिली और संथाली को शामिल किया गया।
