In severe winter, the surface of a lake freezes, but water at the bottom remains in liquid state. What is the reason for this?
SELECT CORRECT OPTION:
A
Ice is a bad conductor of heat.
B
Since the temperature of the lake surface and air is equal, no heat is lost.
C
Density of water is maximum at 4°C.
D
None of the statements (a), (b) and (c) is correct in this context.
Official Solution & Explanation:
Correct Answer: Option C(जल की सघनता 4°C पर अधिकतम होती है।)
Due to the anomalous expansion of water, its density is maximum at 4°C. Cooling surface water reaches 4°C and sinks to the bottom. Once the lake bottom reaches 4°C, further surface cooling freezes the top layer into ice. Because ice is a poor heat conductor, the bottom layer remains liquid at 4°C.
